Heavy Equipment Mechanic (Refuse, Street Sweeper, Sewer Trucks)

Schedule: Full-Time | Day Shift | Monday–Friday | 8:00 AM–4:30 PM Work Environment: Approximately 90% Shop-Based Potential pay increase after 90 days Maryland Industrial Trucks (MIT) is hiring a mechanically strong technician to repair and maintain the specialized equipment mounted on refuse trucks, street sweepers, sewer trucks, and other municipal equipment. IMPORTANT: This is not primarily a diesel engine or truck-chassis repair position. Most of the work is focused on the equipment mounted to the chassis — including hydraulic systems, electrical systems, pumps, motors, controls, wiring, switches, hoses, body components, and related equipment. If you enjoy troubleshooting systems, finding electrical or hydraulic problems, and working on equipment that is different from a traditional tractor or automotive repair environment, this could be a strong fit. WHAT YOU’LL WORK ON • Street sweeper systems • Refuse and trash-body equipment • Sewer and vacuum equipment • Hydraulic pumps, motors, cylinders, valves, and hoses • Electrical wiring, switches, solenoids, sensors, and controls • PTO-driven equipment and related systems • Pumps and fluid-moving systems • Body and equipment components • Mounted municipal and vocational equipment • Related mechanical systems The equipment may be mounted on commercial truck chassis, but the majority of your work will be on the specialized equipment itself rather than the diesel engine or chassis. WHAT YOU’LL DO • Diagnose electrical, hydraulic, and mechanical equipment problems • Trace wiring and troubleshoot switches, controls, sensors, and related electrical components • Diagnose and repair hydraulic pumps, motors, cylinders, valves, hoses, and fittings • Troubleshoot PTO-driven and equipment-mounted systems • Repair pumps, motors, controls, and related components • Perform body and equipment repairs • Complete preventive maintenance and equipment inspections • Use schematics, wiring diagrams, and technical information to locate failures • Determine the actual cause of equipment problems rather than simply replacing parts • Perform approximately 90% of your work in the shop WHO COULD BE A GOOD FIT? You do not have to come from a street-sweeper or sewer-truck dealership. Relevant backgrounds may include: • Heavy equipment repair • Refuse or waste equipment • Municipal fleet maintenance • Vocational trucks • Material-handling equipment • Utility or field-service equipment • Industrial equipment • Traffic-signal or electrical-control systems • Hydraulic equipment • Diesel or heavy-duty repair with strong electrical/hydraulic experience • Welding, fabrication, or equipment-body repair What matters most is your ability to diagnose problems, understand how systems work, and learn specialized equipment. WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR • Strong mechanical aptitude • Electrical troubleshooting ability • Hydraulic troubleshooting and repair experience • Ability to read wiring diagrams and schematics • Ability to diagnose equipment problems independently • Experience using multimeters and diagnostic tools • Comfort working on pumps, motors, wiring, controls, hoses, and equipment-mounted systems • Ability to work around, underneath, and on specialized equipment as required • Willingness to learn unfamiliar equipment and systems • Valid driver’s license • Ability to work safely and independently Direct experience with street sweepers, refuse equipment, or sewer equipment is valuable, but not required if you bring a strong electrical, hydraulic, mechanical, or equipment-repair foundation.
